Schools and offices closed as heavy rain returns to desert UAE

On Thursday, across the United Arab Emirates, so many schools and offices were closed due to heavy rain that returned to the desert country 2 weeks after a recorded heavy downpour that caused floods, which was linked to climate change.

A big storm with strong winds happened in the oil-rich monarchy last night. It rained a lot, with some places getting over 50 millimeters (two inches) of rain by 8:00 am.
According to the spokesperson, This caused flooding in parts of Dubai, including the financial center. The airport had to cancel 13 flights and divert five. The state-owned Emirates and Sister airline Flydubai Airlines warned travelers about delays. Schools went to online classes, and government offices closed.
This rain wasn’t as bad as the one on April 16, which had a record 259.5 mm of rain, forced the cancellation of more than 2,000 flights and caused more problems, including deaths and flight cancellations
Today, there weren’t many cars on Dubai’s usually busy highways, some cars were abandoned and some roads were flooded near the Ibn Battuta mall. Trucks were pumping water out of flooded areas because Dubai’s drainage system couldn’t handle heavy rain well.
Last month’s rain was the worst in the UAE which also killed 21 people in neighbouring Oman since they kept records in 1949.
Scientists assessed the role of climate change in extreme weather events and found the deluge was “most likely” exacerbated by global warming caused by thinking climate change worsened it because of all the fossil fuels we burn.
