Among those nominated as pro-chancellors and chairs of the institutions are former Senate Committee on Education Chairman Joy Emordi, renowned attorney Yusuf Ali, SAN, and Senator Udoma Udoma.

The Federal Ministry of Education made this list of the governing councils’ membership public on Saturday.

The development occurred just four days after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which had been protesting the governing councils’ non-constitution for nearly a year after the government had dissolved it.

ASUU, which had spoken at a news conference about the matter among other things, had threatened to go on a national strike in the event that its demands were not fulfilled by the government in two weeks.

The inauguration and retreat of the councils are scheduled for May 30 and 31, 2024, according to a statement released by Didi Esther Walson-Jack, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education.

She said:“The inauguration and retreat for the Governing Councils will take place on Thursday, May 30, and Friday, May 31, 2024, at the National Universities Commission, 26 Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Maitama, Abuja. Both events will commence at 9:00 am daily. “

50 federal institutions, 37 polytechnics, and 24 colleges of education are on the list, which also includes politicians, technocrats, and traditional rulers.

The list states that Isa Yuguda, a former governor of Bauchi State, is the leader of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), while Udoma Udo Udoma, a former minister of budget and economic planning, was named pro-chancellor and chairman of Bayero University, Kano, Kano State; Chief Wole Olanipekun, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), was named pro-Chancellor and chairman of the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

Along the same line, Prof. Jibrilla Dahiru Amin is in charge of the University of Abuja, which is presently immersed in an ongoing walkout initiated by its ASUU chapter.
